H.E. the Minister of Commerce and Investment Inaugurates the Comprehensive Guide to Consumer Rights

H.E. The Minister of Commerce and Investment, Dr. Majid bin Abdullah Al Qasabi, inaugurates today, 15.03.2018 the Guide for Consumer Rights, which is considered a comprehensive reference to all the rights and duties of consumers. The Ministry provides and explains through various chapters of this unified guide more than 50 rights that contribute to raise awareness among the consumers and traders, in a way to preserve the rights of all parties.

The launching of the Comprehensive Guide to Consumer Rights coincides with the World Consumer Rights Day, which is adopted by the United Nations on 15 March every year.

MCI official spokesman, Mr. Abdul Rahman Al-Hussein, said that the launching of the Consumer Right Guide reflects the Ministry’s role in protecting the rights of both the consumer and the trader alike. It comes  to fulfill their key roles in improving and developing the commercial environment in the Kingdom, as stated in the initiative of “Raising the Awareness and Satisfaction of both the Consumer and the Trader”, which is one of MCI initiatives within the National Transformation Program 2020.

MCI official spokesman added that the guide enables the public to know their rights and duties, and it includes Rules & Regulations for purchasing and replacing goods, as well as the relevant maintenance and spare parts.

Mr. Abdul Rahman Al Hussain pointed out that the Consumer Right Guide includes six chapters. The first chapter deals with the general rights of the consumer regarding the commercial data for all goods and products. The second chapter deals with the sector of durable goods, focusing on the system of purchasing new items, such as electrical appliances and vehicles, with the related maintenance and spare parts and any other relevant rights. The third chapter focuses on the general rights of replacing and returning. The fourth chapter includes raising the consumer’s awareness of the rules and regulations of offering sales and commercial contests. The fifth chapter covers the consumer rights in relation to the legislation of foodstuffs and provisions. The sixth chapter highlights the incentives and prizes offered to the informers about the violators or offenders who breach the law.

The Ministry of Commerce and Investment  would like to confirm its on-going efforts to protect and enhance the consumer’s trust, through its inspection and control over the markets, also through combating the commercial fraud, following up the availability and quality of the products offered in the markets, besides organizing patrol awareness exhibitions in different cities of the Kingdom, as well as making awareness campaigns for the consumers and traders in the Press and Social Media.
