More than 20 Thousand Pieces of Adulterated Mattresses & pillows were Seized
As MCI has been implementing inspection campaigns on adulterated and counterfeit goods, a tip off a citizen led to reveal and detect the fifth factory using discarded and polluted sponge to make mattresses in Medina. During raiding and inspecting the warehouse located inside a private farm, it turned out that the labors used to collect recycled and polluted sponge from the waste to make Arabian sofas, mattresses and pillows without any sterilization process, in order to distribute such quantities in the local markets, claiming that they are of high quality.
The seizure included more than 20 thousand pieces of adulterated mattresses and pillows, in addition to special machines used in sewing and embroidery. The inspectors monitored as well other violations related to the absence of any license, also there was no external sign showing the type of activity, as well as the absence of safety devices. The owner was summoned by the Ministry for investigation and taking the legal proceedings.
This comes within the Ministry's efforts in implementing inspection rounds on the polluted and discarded sponge factories and warehouses in various regions of the Kingdom, resulted in revealing and detecting plants, using polluted and recycled sponge for making mattresses, beside counterfeiting and forging trademarks in order to cheat and mislead the consumers. Consequently, two warehouses were shut down in Jeddah and a plant in Riyadh, after proving the evidence of their involvement in counterfeiting and adulteration. Also two rest houses in Jeddah, prepared for the same purpose, were shut down by the Ministry. Those responsible were summoned for investigation and taking the legal procedures against them.
